Jay DeFeo’s The Rose arrived soon after the 1969 wing of the School was completed and placed in the Conference Room. Jay was teaching painting and was good friends with the School’s Director, Fred Martin. The Rose was visible for maybe 3-5 years and then protected with a covering that included plaster and chicken wire as gravity took its toll on the 1,500+ pounds of paint. The Rose remained in the Conference Room, revered--- “peeping out, like a foot above a false wall” until the Whitney Museum purchased it from the DeFeo Trust c. 1995
